An
extension of the Truckee River Project, this field and classroom project was
designed and implemented in cooperation with the University of Nevada, assoc.
professor Mae Gustin of the Natural Resources and Environmental Science Department
and Susan Donaldson, Ph.D., water quality specialist with University of Nevada
Cooperative Extension.
The project centers around a field trip to the Steamboat Ditch wetlands, the
Truckee Meadows Wastewater Treatment Facility, and the Truckee River. Students
will gather data on water chemistry, pollutants, and macroinvertebrates in
attempt to determine a wetlands ability to filter contaminates in relation
to a wastewater treatment facility and the cost benefits of each.
Data
drawn from the study and conclusions will be posted at the link to the left.
