Most all of us are aware of the Donner Party and the difficulty of their journey. Today that section of the Emigrant Trail that passes our way is easily and swiftly traveled by automobile on Interstate 80. But that familiar path is also a popular route for the more leisurely pace of the bicyclists that follow that same trek the pioneers ventured in the 1850’s. There is much to see and explore on this historic byway --- mysterious Pyramid Lake, Derby Dam, the Newlands project, the Truckee River Park in downtown Reno, the Truckee Canyon, and the jewel of the Sierras, Lake Tahoe. There are natural wonders to observe, photos to be snapped, scenes to be painted, poetry to be written. It would seem time that those intrepid cyclists have an electronic travel brochure that will follow that Dangerous Crossing.
Introduction
The Task
Your class will create an electronic travel guide for exploratory cyclists as they travel from Pyramid Lake up the Truckee to Lake Tahoe.
Your group will be assigned a location on our virtual tour for which you will supply our editors all the information to develop our tour guide website. Each site has already been listed on our virtual tour map (http://www.bdbillinghurst.com/Tr_tour.html), but you will be adding far more than what we’ve established here for our Travel Guide.
The Process

Each person in your group is to select one of the following positions. A job description for each position is included.

Aquatic Biologist: This individual, with help from the rest of the group, will gather water samples from their site and identify the aquatic organisms in the river and establish the biotic index for that site. In coordination with the aquatic chemist, the biologist will prepare a report that assesses the relative environmental quality of the river at that site.

Aquatic Chemist: This individual, with help from the rest of the group, will gather water samples from their site and establish the chemical properties of the river that affect and support aquatic life and the environmental health of the river at that site. In coordination with the aquatic biologist, the chemist will prepare a report that assesses the relative environmental quality of the river at that site.

Historian: This individual will research the history of the Truckee River and particularly those events that relate directly to their assigned site. A report will be provided that demonstrates a time line for that site and offers points of historical interest that we can provide on our Travel Guide.

Riparian Biologists
: These individuals will prepare a report that establishes what flora and fauna are present in the immediate area surrounding their site. They will provide both descriptions and digitized photos for our Travel Guide.

Poet Laureate
: This individual will be our artist in residence. He or she will provide an essay that portrays the beauty and wonder of their site --- what attractions await the visitor on their trek up the Truckee at that locale. This artist will also be responsible for coordinating the addition of poems, digital photos and artistic impressions that will be added to the Travel Guide website for their assigned river location.

All members of the group are expected to contribute in each area. The person in charge of each area will make the final decisions.

Once all the reports are completed (and copies submitted to your team teachers), the group will meet and share their findings. At that point the group will prepare a design plan for their site’s part of the Internet Travel guide and submit it to the web designers. To see a template for a design plan, click here.
Evaluation
Each member of the group will be given an individual grade and a group grade.
Your individual grade will be based on the research report that you will submit and will be assessed according to the research paper scoring rubric.
Your group grade will be based on your site design plan and the resources your group provides for our Travel Guide and assessed according to the Group Scoring Rubric
Conclusion
The Truckee River is a unique waterway. It is not a robust river by most standards of important rivers in the country. It is not very long, wide, nor deep. It does, however, connect two of the most unique, important, and spectacular lakes in the West. It is visually stunning --- a classic western mountain stream. It is also one of the most legislated and litigated rivers in the nation.
After completing this WebQuest, you hopefully have a better appreciation of history surrounding the Truckee, a greater understanding of the science of a riparian zone, and a model for future artistic impressions. Be proud of your creations and show them off to your friends and family.
