Instrumental Music Required Books and Materials

Orchestra Method Books

• Beginning Orchestra: Essential Elements 2000 For Strings ≠ Book I
• Intermediate Orchestra: Essential Elements 2000 For Strings ≠ Books I & II

Orchestra Materials

• All strings: Rosin, soft cleaning cloth, (1 set of extra strings is suggested), and a music stand for home practice
• Violin and Viola: Shoulder rest
• Cello and Bass: Rock stop or similar end pin device

Concert Band Method Books

Band Materials

• Flute: Soft cleaning cloth and rod, small screwdriver, and crochet hook (opt.)
• Reed Instruments: Beginning and Intermediate should have 3 working reeds (#2.5 or medium soft) with them at all times. Advanced students should have 3 #3 reeds (intermediate students will progress to #3 reeds over the course of the year). Soft cleaning cloth or swab. Neck straps are required on all bass clarinets, bassoons, and saxophones. All instruments with mouthpieces should have appropriate ligatures and mouthpiece guards.
• Brass: Mouthpiece, valve oil, slide and tuning slide lubricant (slide cream w/ water is preferable to oil for trombones), instrument snake and soft cleaning cloth. Mutes as necessary
• Percussion: Practice kit consisting of bells and practice pad or snare drum, and appropriate mallets and sticks (medium hard bell mallets, medium timpani mallets, and Vic Firth 5B sticks or the equivalent). It is strongly suggested that percussionists also procure a stick bagä loose drum sticks are a distraction in the school environment.
• Bass Guitar: Guitar strap, and amplifier cord

Concert Attire

Concert attire consists of the BDB Ensemble shirt, black pants or slacks, black socks and black shoes. Girls may wear an appropriate length black skirt in lieu of slacks or pants. Order forms for the BDB Ensemble shirt will be available by September 15 (Open House). Price is approximately $15.00.
