Elements of Literature
Our primary textbook is an integrated language and literature anthology which includes a wide variety of classic, contemporary, and multicultural selections. The text also includes writing and skills workshops which we often use in conjunction wth our Elements of Language.

Elements of Lamguage
An excellent supplement to our textbook, Elements of Language offers integrated unit and lesson plans through writing workshops as well as practical lessons that target individual skills. The grammar and usage handbook section of the text provide practice within the context of the writing process and through a wealth of literary models

Call of the Wild - Jack London
The story of Buck explores the role environment plays in shaping character. A priviledged, dignified dog from southern California is shipped to Alaska during the 1890's Gold Rush. Mistreated, he learns to survive as a member of a dog sled team, where "the law of club and fang" overrides the rules of civilized society.

The Glory Field - Walter Dean Myers
Chronicles milestones in African-American history through the saga of the Lewis family from the 1700s to present day. The family's founder, transported from Africa to America on a slave ship, inspires his descendents to triumph over many difficulties.

Nothing But the Truth - Avi
The "documentary novel" is told in the form of school memos, diary entries, letters, radio talk show transcripts, and dialogue. Philip, a high school goof-off, hums along when the National Anthem is played over the school intercom. This gets him caught up in a battle involving patriotism, school policy, the national media.... and a struggle for justice.

The Clay Marble - Minfong Ho
This historical novel, set in a Cambodian refugee camp in the 1980s, describes how a young girl - with courage, quick thinking, and perseverance - copes, helped by stories and a "magical" marble.

The Contender - Robert Lipsyte
Living in Harlem during the 1960s civil rights movement, a high school dropout puts himself through the rigor and discipline of boxing training and wonders whether he has the heart of a contender.

So Far from the Bamboo Grove - Yoko Kawashima Watkins
This memoir describes a Japanese family's odyssey from Korea to Japan at the end of WWII. Eleven-year old Yoko, her sister and her mother become refugees but have the strength of spirit to prevail.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond - Elizabeth George Speare
This romantic, historical novel is about a young girl's rebellion against her Puritan surroundings and the choice of direction she must take when a woman she knows is accused of witchcraft.

The Diary of Anne Frank - Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett
The play is a re-enactment of events from the diary of a Jewish girl who hid with her family from the Nazis in Holland. This award winning play, along with the diary on which it is based, is an insightful portrait of courage, dignity, and perseverance.

The delightful tale which first creates the fantasy called Middle Earth and its charming dwarf-like creatures, the Hobbits. Catherine Called Birdy -Karen Cushman
