Elements of Literature
Our
primary textbook is an integrated language and literature anthology
which includes a wide variety of classic, contemporary, and multicultural
selections. The text also includes writing and skills workshops which
we often use in conjunction wth our Elements of Language.
Elements of Lamguage
An
excellent supplement to our textbook, Elements of Language offers
integrated unit and lesson plans through writing workshops as well as
practical lessons that target individual skills. The grammar and usage
handbook section of the text provide practice within the context of
the writing process and through a wealth of literary models
Call
of the Wild - Jack London

character. A priviledged, dignified dog from southern
California is shipped to Alaska during the 1890's Gold Rush.
Mistreated, he learns to survive as a member of a dog sled
team, where "the law of club and fang" overrides the rules
of civilized society.
The
Glory Field - Walter Dean Myers
Chronicles

inspires his descendents to triumph over many
difficulties.
Nothing
But the Truth - Avi
The
"documentary novel" is told in the form of school memos,
diary entries, letters, radio talk show transcripts, and
dialogue. Philip, a high school goof-off, hums along when
the National Anthem is played over the school intercom. This
gets him caught up in a battle involving patriotism, school
policy, the national media.... and a struggle for
justice.
The
Clay Marble - Minfong Ho
This
historical novel, set in a Cambodian refugee camp in the
1980s, describes how a young girl - with courage, quick
thinking, and perseverance - copes, helped by stories and a
"magical" marble.
The
Contender - Robert Lipsyte
Living
in Harlem during the 1960s civil rights movement, a high
school dropout puts himself through the rigor and discipline
of boxing training and wonders whether he has the heart of a
contender.
So
Far from the Bamboo Grove - Yoko Kawashima
Watkins
This
memoir describes a Japanese family's odyssey from Korea to
Japan at the end of WWII. Eleven-year old Yoko, her sister
and her mother become refugees but have the strength of
spirit to prevail.
The
Witch of Blackbird Pond - Elizabeth George Speare
This
romantic, historical novel is about a young girl's rebellion
against her Puritan surroundings and the choice of direction
she must take when a woman she knows is accused of
witchcraft.
The
Diary of Anne Frank - Frances Goodrich and Albert
Hackett
The
play is a re-enactment of events from the diary of a Jewish
girl who hid with her family from the Nazis in Holland. This
award winning play, along with the diary on which it is
based, is an insightful portrait of courage, dignity, and
perseverance.
